| Humboldt General Plan Update HIA |
The General Plan
Update currently being drafted will guide land use and transportation
infrastructure decisions for Humboldt County and will impact the health
and well-being of residents in many ways. In recent years, there has
been growing recognition by researchers, public officials, and
community advocates that local conditions and neighborhood design
impact community and individual well-being through effects on physical
activity, nutrition, substance abuse, injuries, mental health,
violence, and environmental quality. We have an opportunity through
focus groups, to discuss the health of our community as it relates to
rural land use issues in the General Plan. For example,
accessible neighborhood grocery stores reduce diet-related diseases;
access to natural spaces, public transit and pedestrian-friendly
environments promote physical activity and improve mental health;
housing quality and affordability impact the health of seniors and low
income residents.
With funding from The California Endowment, the County Department of Health and Human Services and Humboldt Partnership for Active Living (HumPAL) will be bringing trained staff from Human Impact Partners, a non-profit organization experienced in conducting health impact assessments, to Humboldt County. These experts will facilitate three focus groups. The outcomes of the focus groups, research, and a literature review will all be used to analyze the positive and negative health impacts associated with options under consideration in the County General Plan Update and to compile the HIA. The completed HIA will be presented to the Humboldt County Planning Commission, Department of Community Development and the Board of Supervisors to help inform their consideration of Humboldt County General Plan policy options. |
